Episode Overview:
The fight to save critically ill patients has remained largely unchanged for over 70 years- until now.
Our next guest, Doug Evans, is revolutionizing critical care as President and CEO of Lungpacer Medical.
With over three decades of medical device innovation and 300+ issued patents, Doug's personal mission was born from tragedy when his 14-year-old son required mechanical ventilation during his cancer battle.
This heartbreaking experience drove Doug to tackle ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction, a condition that affects millions and contributes to the staggering 50% mortality rate among ventilated patients.
Through groundbreaking neurostimulation technology, Doug and his team achieved the impossible—FDA approval for the first device designed to strengthen patients' diaphragms while on ventilation.
Join us to discover how Lungpacer's pioneering AeroPace System is transforming outcomes, reducing ventilator dependency, and offering hope to families facing their darkest hours. Let's go!
Episode Highlights:
- Personal Mission Born from Tragedy: Doug founded Lungpacer Medical after his 14-year-old son Cameron required mechanical ventilation during his cancer battle, driving his commitment to improve outcomes for critically ill patients.
- Historic FDA Breakthrough: In December 2024, Lungpacer's AeroPace System became the first and only FDA-approved device designed to strengthen the diaphragm in mechanically ventilated patients.
- Proven Clinical Results: The AeroPace System reduces ventilator time by 3 days, decreases 30-day ventilator dependency risk by 35%, and cuts re-ventilation risk by 60%.
- Life-Saving Patient Impact: Doug shared the powerful story of their first U.S. patient who had given up hope and wanted life support removed, but was saved through their technology and went home for the holidays.
- Next-Generation Innovation: The investigational AeroNova System promises continuous diaphragm stimulation with every breath, potentially improving not just muscle strength but also lung, brain, and heart function.
About our Guest:
Doug Evans brings over three decades of medical device innovation to his role as President and CEO of Lungpacer Medical Inc. As a serial entrepreneur and inventor, Doug has developed more than 3 00 issued patents covering pioneering devices that have revolutionized healthcare for over 15 million patients worldwide.
Doug's journey with Lungpacer began with the heartbreaking experience of his 14-year-old son's struggle with mechanical ventilation during his cancer battle. After losing his son, Doug committed himself to solving the clinical challenges that affect millions of critically ill patients who depend on mechanical ventilation to survive.
His determination has led to the development of revolutionary neurostimulation technology that works "like lifting weights to build strength" for patients' diaphragms while they remain on mechanical ventilation. This breakthrough approach addresses ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction, a major barrier to patient recovery that contributes to the staggering mortality rates in intensive care units.
Doug's personal mission drives Lungpacer's vision: to free patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation and preserve their overall health during critical illness.
BeforeLungpacer, Doug's career has spanned leadership roles across both public and private companies, where he has consistently created first-of-their-kind products. Hecurrently serves as Chairman at TELA Bio (NASDAQ: TELA) and sits on the board ofWhiteSwell Medical. His previous leadership includes roles as Operating Director andBoard Member of Intact Vascular, which Royal Philips acquired for $360 million in 2020,and Chief Operating Officer of Kensey Nash Corporation (NASDAQ: KNSY), acquired byRoyal DSM for $360 million in 2012.
Doug holds a Bachelor's in Engineering Science, an honors degree in Bioengineering, and aMaster's in Business Management from Pennsylvania State University, plus a Master's inElectrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Beyond his professional achievements, Doug channels his personal experience in advocacy work as co-founder of the Cure4Cam Childhood Cancer Foundation, which raises awareness about childhood cancers and supports development of more humane therapies for children.
